Men Defeat East Carolina,125.5-111.5, AU Women Fall to ECU, 91.5-141.5
Eagles' men
remain undefeated after fourth CAA win The American men continued their dominance in the CAA as they stayed undefeated with a win over East Carolina while the AU women lost a hard fought battle to the lady Pirates today at Reeves Aquatic Complex. The AU men's swimming and diving team (4-0, 4-0 CAA) got a victory from its 400 medley squad (3:27.44) in the first event to set the tone for the meet. Ethan Bassett finished first in the next event, the 1000m free (9:45.84), followed by a second place finish by Frank Byskov and third place finish by Will Maher in the next event, the 200 free. The Eagles then got a first place finish from Mark Liscinsky in the 50 free (21.51) and a second place finish from Dominick Szabo in the 200 IM. AU got a boost in the 200 fly (154.47) as Kristian Gronbech and Johan Setterberg finished first and second followed by a second place finish by Maher in the 100 free. A win by Liscinsky in the 200 back (1:51.28) and a one-two finish by Bassett and Byskov in the 500 free (4:38.02) secured the victory for the Eagles. AU finished the meet with a Bassett win and Szabo second place in the 200 breast (2:05.54) and a second place team finish in the 400 free relay. The ECU men got victories from Matt Walker at the 200 free (1:40.97), Claes Lindgren at the 200 IM (1:54.09), Walker at the 100 free (46.62), and their 400 free relay team (3:10.03). The American women's swimming and diving team (1-3, 1-3 CAA) got victories from Rebeca Santos at the 200 free (1:55.45), Jessica Lidstrom at the 100 free (53.40), and the 400 free relay squad (3:36.82) but it was not enough to overcome ECU's 10 first place finishes. The Eagles also had strong showings from Lidstrom's second place at the 50 free and a second-third finish from Maria Ortiz and Junkal Irigoien in the 200 IM. American also got a second place finishes from Santos in the 200 fly, Irigoien in the 200 back, Sarai Justes in the 500 free, and Stina Lindman at the 200 breast. The lady Pirates started the meet with victories from their 400 medley relay squad (3:57.97) and Dana Fuller in the 1000 free (10:28.58). ECU also got first place finishes from Courtney Foster at the 50 free (24.70), Allison Terrill in the 200 IM (2:07.04) and 200 fly (2:06.79), and Amy Hendrick in the 200 back (2:09.32). East Carolina finished the meet with a first place finishes from Fuller in the 500 free (5:08.26) and Samantha Perry in the 200 breast (2:22.07). In the diving competition, which took place at 7:00 pm on Fri. Jan. 19 at Reeves Aquatic Center, AU picked up wins on the men's side from Adam Schryver at both the one and three-meter springboard (127.70, 109.05). On the women's side, ECU placed first and second on the one-meter springboard while AU's Anne Girvin placed third (131.00). On the three-meter springboard, the Eagles' Devon Chokel finished second (123.95) while the Pirates took away first and third place. East Carolina next
swims at George Mason on Sun., Jan. 21 at 1:00 pm while American travels
to Old Dominion to take onthe monarchs along with William & Mary and
UNC Wilmington on Fri. and Sat., Jan. 26-27 at 5:00 pm and 10:00 am respectively.
