WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After rounding up their regular season with a win over 2001 Patriot League Champion Army on Saturday, Jan. 26, the American men's and women's swimming and diving teams are preparing this week for the 2002 Patriot League Championships to be held on February 14-16 at the United States Naval Academy.

The Eagles entered their first season of Patriot League competition in 2001-02 after competing in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in 2000-01. The men's team went undefeated last season for the first time since 1994-95 and won the most points of any team at the CAA Championships in 2001. Meanwhile, the women broke the 400 Medley, 400 Free, and 800 Free relay records at American and finished with the second-most points of any team at the CAA Championships.

This year, the men went a perfect 3-0 against Patriot League opponents Navy, Bucknell, and Army. The women went 2-1, defeating Bucknell and Army but falling to Navy. A recent collegeswimming.com poll placed the American men at No. 15 in the nation and the women at No. 10 for all mid-major programs.

The 2002 Patriot League Championships will take place over three days in Lejeune Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Preliminary events will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 14-16 and finals will be held in the evenings starting at 6:00 p.m. Scoring will follow NCAA rues. A competitor may swim in a maximum of seven events of which no more than three may be individual events. Each team may have no more than 18 competitors in the meet.

Spectator tickets to the championship will be on sale at the door one hour prior to the beginning of the meet. There will be no advance sale of tickets. Visitors are not allowed to dirve on the Yard; tentative plans are for visitors to park at the Navy/Marine Corps Memorial Football Stadium to take a shuttle bus to Lejeune Hall.
