American Men Lead Swimming & Diving All-League Selections
Men earn six spots on all-league team; Three women garner honors

Feb. 20, 2002

WASHINGTON -- After breaking six league records at last weekend’s Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the American University men’s swimming and diving team led all teams with six selections to the All-Patriot League team. On the women’s side, the Eagles had three All-League nods after toppling league records in two relay events.

An All-League First Team selection and the 2002 Men’s Swimmer of the Meet, American junior Mark Liscinsky had a record-breaking weekend at the Patriot League Championship. He toppled three league records, breaking each mark twice in the preliminaries and finals. Liscinsky set the new records with a 1:48.59 in the 200 individual medley, a 50.14 in the 100 backstroke and a 1:47.81 in the 200 backstroke.

Meanwhile, sophomore All-League First Team selection Dominick Szabo also made strides throughout the championships. He won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events, setting a new record in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:00.10. Ethan Bassett, the final All-League first-team selection for the American men, won the 500-yard freestyle events and the 400-yard individual medley.

On the women’s end, three swimmers earned All-League First Team selections. Senior Junkal Irigoien earned first place in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, and was also a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that set a new Patriot League record with a time of 7:37.20. Senior Stina Lindman won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events to claim two first-place victories and was a part of the 400-yard medley relay team, whose time of 3:52.95 set a new Patriot League record. Rounding out the women’s All-League honorees, sophomore Jessica Lidstrom again proved dominant in the freestyle. She won the 100 and 200-yard competitions and set new personal bests in both events. She was a member of both record-setting relay teams for the women.

Men’s second team selections included Tim Miller, Stephen Maher, and Mike Lawson. Seventh-year head coach Mark Davin was also honored after his inaugural season of coaching in the Patriot League, as he earned the Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year in 2002.

American University, which is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League, officially joined the conference on July 1. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
