WASHINGTON --
Junior Stina Lindman (Skane,
Sweden/Polhemsskolan) and sophomore Jessica
Lidstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/The Swedish School) competed at the National
Championships in Sweden last week. Lindman finished in eighth place overall
in the 50-meter breaststroke, and her time of 33.56 in the semifinals
set a new school record for the event. Lidstrom also had a record-setting
weekend, as her 100-meter split time of 58.14 in the 400-meter freestyle
relay is a school record for the women's 100-meter freestyle.
Lindman set her record on the first day of tournament competition after
finishing in seventh place in the preliminaries of the 50-meter freestyle,
then coming in fifth in the semifinals before notching an eighth-place
final mark. Meanwhile, Lindman swam in the 400-meter freestlye relay twice,
notching a 59.28 split in the prelims and her record 58.14 in the finals.
On the second day of competition, Lindman competed in the 200-meter breastroke,
finishing with a 2:41.59, a personal best time in the event and third
all-time on American's long course meters top ten list.
Finally, on day three, Lidstrom competed in the 100-meter freestyle, finishing
in 15th place in 58.15, only one second behind her record time from the
previous race. In the semifinals of the event, she went 58.38 to finish
in 15th place overall. She also competed in the 200-meter Individual Medley
with a time 2:24.79 in the preliminaries. In relay action, Lidstrom again
led off the 800-meter freestyle team, and had a split time of 2:05.72,
setting another American record in the 200-meter freestyle in long course
meters.
The American women's swimming and diving team finished in third place
at the Patriot League Championships in their inaugural season of league
competition in 2002. The Eagles also had three selections to the All-Patriot
League team, as Lindman, Lidstrom, and junior Junkal
Irogien notched first-team selections.
