Swimming & Diving Teams Earn All-Academic Accolades
Women's Team Ranks Fourth Among All Division I Programs

Aug. 15, 2001

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- American University's women's and men's swimming and diving teams were recently recognized as All-Academic Teams for the 2001 Winter/Spring Semester by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

The AU women's team celebrated its twelfth consecutive all-academic nod from the CSCAA with a program-record 3.474 team grade-point average (GPA). The Eagles' outstanding mark was the fourth-best combined GPA of all Division I programs for the semester.

The men's team, which is coming off its second undefeated season since the 1994-95 campaign, was ranked 27th among men's Division I programs, 72nd overall, with a 2.867 team GPA.

In order to qualify for the CSCAA All-Academic honor, the grade-point average of the entire swimming and diving team, including all student-athletes on the eligibility list, must average at least a 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. American University was one of 200 teams that met the criteria for the 2000-01 Winter/Spring Semester.

Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams open their seasons with the Potomac Relays on Oct. 12. Dual competitions begin on Oct. 27 as the Eagles' welcome Notre Dame to Reeves Aquatic Complex.

American University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women's sports and nine for men. American became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1.
