WASHINGTON -- American University's women's and men's swimming and diving teams opened their 2001-2001 season this past weekend at the annual Alumni Red/Blue Meet.

The inaugural meet showcased many top returners competing against one another. Junior Erik Hollingshead (Magnolia, Texas/Klein Forest) swam the 100-yard freestyle in 48.83, placing him at eighth on American's all-time top ten times list. Will Maher set the all-time record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.08 seconds in 2000.

On the women's side, freshman newcomer Lindsay McDavitt (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep.) made her mark in her collegiate debut. She won the 500-yard freestyle by almost two seconds with a time of 5:17.77 and also led the pack in the 200 individual relay, finishing in 2:12.50. Jessica Lidstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/ASO Gymnasium) continued to dominate in her specialty stroke, freestyle, winning the 50-yard, 100-yard, and 200-yard events. She missed beating her best time from 2000-01 (24.40) in the 50-yard free by only three-tenths of a second, finishing in 24.72.

The men are gearing up this week for their first official meet of 2001-2002. They will swim against the Notre Dame men's team as well as members of the Curl Burke Club program in a tri-meet scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 27, at 1:00 p.m. in the Reeves Aquatic Center.
