Men's Swiming and Diving Competes in First Dual of 2001-02
Eagles fall to top-ranked Notre Dame, 174-142

Meet Results -- Oct. 27, 2001

WASHINGTON -- The men's swimming and diving team opened their 2001-2002 season on Saturday when it hosted Notre Dame. Though the Eagles fell 174-142, two swimmers recorded pool records at the team's inugural meet in the first season of Patriot League competition.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, sophomore Dominick Szabo (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), last year's CAA Swimmer of the Year, broke the American pool record with a time of 56.34. Later, in the second-to-last event of the afternoon, junior Mark Liscinsky (Olney, Md./Sherwood) also recorded a pool record with his 100-yard split time of 46.02 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Notre Dame took first place in 11-of-17 events at today's meet, including the day's first event, the 200-yard medley relay. Dean Wolf, Jason FItzpatrick, David Horak, and Frank Krakowski combined for a complete time of 1:36.88, giving them 11 points.

Other top finishers for American included Stephen Maher (Providence, R.I./Wheeler), who took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.50, Mike Lawson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School), who took the 100-yard backstroke in 52.71 and Ethan Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) who finished first in the 400-yard Individual Medley as well as the 500-yard freestyle.

The men were recently selected to finish second in the Patriot League in a recent preseason poll conducted by league coaches and administrators. They will return to the water on Saturday, Nov. 10, when they host Georgia Tech in a dual meet at 1:00 p.m. in the Reeves Aquatic Center.
