Swimming & Diving Falls to VT and WVU
Szabo captures win in 200 breaststroke for AU

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both fell to Virginia Tech and West Virginia Saturday in a tri-meet at War Memorial Pool.
The men's team lost to the Hokies by a score of 164-75 while the women lost, 141-72. The Mountaineers topped out the AU men's team, 147.5-91.5, while and knocked off the AU women, 149-70.
AU juniors Dominick Szabo (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Ethan Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) finished 1-2 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Szabo clinched first in 2:04.23 while Bassett was close behind in 2:05.71. Bassett also came in second in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:38.18 and tied for third in the 200-yard IM in 1:55.71.
Senior Mark Liscinsky (Olney, Md./Sherwood) was second in both the 200-yard backstroke in 1:53.86 and in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.94. Freshman Erwan Jeffroy (Marleil-Marly, France/Lycee Jeanne D'Albret) took fifth in the 200 backstroke in 1:59.62.
American freshman Christina Huang (Hubei Province, China/Wuhan (Sports School) was strong in several events, taking third in the 200-yard IM (2:12.68) and fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.01). Senior Maria Ortiz (Caliz, Colombia/The Bolles School) was fifth in latter event in 2:30.10.
The AU men's 400-yard medley relay team was third behind a pair of Virginia Tech squads. Senior Mike Lawson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown), Szabo, Stephen Maher (Stuart, Fla./Lincoln) and Liscinsky finished in 3:28.78.
In diving events, Adam Schryver (Harrington Park, N.J./North Valley Old Tappan) was third in the 3-meter competition (199.85) and fourth in the 1-meter (195.65). Sara Barger (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) was fifth in both the 1-meter in (177.60) and 3-meter (174.35).
The Eagles will have several weeks off before the Patriot League Championships at Bucknell on Feb. 20-22.
