Men's Swimming Defeats UMBC, Women Fall to Retrievers
Liscinsky sets new pool record in win; Lidstrom wins two events

Mark Liscinsky set a new pool record in the 200 freestyle.

WASHINGTON -- The American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their dual meet schedule for 2002-03 this evening against UMBC. The men defeated the Retrievers while the visitors beat the AU women.

In the 200-yard freestyle, senior Mark Liscinsky recorded a new Reeves Aquatic Center pool record swimming 1:39.33. Liscinsky's time broke his own pool record by .50 seconds and he is now only .05 seconds away from the NCAA "B" qualifier. Liscinsky also won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:50.53, missing the pool record by .50 seconds. He was also second in the 200-yard butterfly, engaging in an exciting race with UMBC's Geza Szabo as Liscinsky swam 1:53.95.

Also performing well for the men was junior Ethan Bassett. Bassett won the 1000-yard freestyle (9:27.18), the 500-yard freestyle (4:37.44) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.45). In the 1000 free, Bassett swam away from the field, winning the event by over 16 seconds.

Other top finishers for AU include Dominick Szabo who won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:53.57 and was second in the 200-yard breaststroke to Bassett (2:05.48). Stephen Maher captured the 100-yard freestyle in 46.77 and was second to Liscinsky in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.16 and Estebe Salgado was second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.52). Erwan Jeffroy was second to Bassett in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.73.

Jessica Lidstrom won the 100 free and the 200 free against UMBC.

On the women's side, Jessica Lidstrom captured two events, winning the 100-yard freestyle (53.85) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.56).

Also swimming well for AU was Kia Kilpinen who was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.62. Chelsea Oudin was third in the event in 26.22. Liz West had two second-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.76) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.44). Maria Ortiz grabbed second for the Eagles in the 200-yard breaststroke, swimming 2:27.29.

The swim team begins Patriot League action as the Eagles travel to Army on Nov. 8. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
