AUSTIN, Texas -- American University junior Dom Szabo (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) was named an All-America Friday night at the NCAA Championships at the University of Texas, finishing eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke final.

Szabo, who nabbed the sixth spot in the morning preliminaries with a time of 53.77, touched the wall in the final in 53.94. He becomes American's 18th swimming & diving All-America and the first since 1996. Szabo swam a personal best and set new school and Patriot League records with a time of 53.77 to qualify for the final. He is the first American University swimmer to reach an NCAA final.

"He didn't go out as fast as he did in the morning, he got off to a slow start," said AU Head Coach Mark Davin. "But it was still a fantastic swim."

Texas' Brendan Hanson set a new NCAA Meet record with a 51.96 to claim championship honors. Previously, Szabo had reset an 11-year-old Patriot League record in December with a 54.14 before touching at 54.00 at last month's Patriot League Championships.

On Saturday, Szabo will compete in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries while senior Mark Liscinsky (Olney, Md./Sherwood) swims in the 200 backstroke.
