AU Women’s Swimming & Diving Garners 12 on PL Academic Honor Roll
Two-time Scholar-Athlete Lidstrom Leads Eagles

Cassie Cullen was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

WASHINGTON — Twelve members of the American University women’s swimming and diving team were selected to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for the spring of 2003 as announced today by Patriot League Exective Director, Carolyn Schlie Femovich.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average (GPA) in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the six winter and nine spring League-sponsored championship sports. AU was third behind Bucknell (17) and Holy Cross (15) in award recipients.

Two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year Jessica Lidstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/The Swedish School in London) earned honors for the second straight year with a 3.78 GPA in biology. Seniors Elizabeth Bresnahan-McRae (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) and Elizabeth West (Brentwood, Tenn./University School of Nashville) were honored in their final semesters.

Four other members of the junior class besides Lidstrom were also selected including: Melissa Ferrara (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Township), Stephanie Fletcher (Miami, Fla./Boyd Anderson ), Kia Kilpinen (Stockholm, Sweden/ASO Gymnasium) and Kim Nichols (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk).

AU had four sophomores earning high marks in the spring as well. Elena Alberti (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), diver Sara Barger (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern), Cassie Cullen (Milford, Conn./Lauralton Hall) and Lindsay Metcalfe (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) were all honored. Freshman Christine Mikulski (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) also joins the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and a regular-season title in men’s basketball.
