Bassett and Lidstrom Take Home Patriot League Swimmer of the Week Honors
Bassett captures third weekly honor this season

WASHINGTON – With three first-place victories each against Lehigh, American University swimmers Jessica Lidstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/The Swedish School in London) and Ethan Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) were named Patriot League Swimmer of the Week for the week ending Jan. 25.

Lidstrom, the three-year captain of the women’s team, claims the Women’s Swimmer of the Week honor for the first time this season after capturing victories in the 200 freestyle (1:56.98) and the 200 individual medley (2:11.93). She also finished in the top spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.45.

Bassett receives the Men’s Swimmer of the Week award for the third time this season after taking home first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (1:56:24) and the 1650 freestyle (15:50.90). In addition, Bassett won the 200 breaststroke in 2:03.38, finishing almost eight seconds faster than his closest competitor and breaking a Reeves Aquatic Center record which was previously held by teammate Dominick Szabo at 2:03.74.

The Eagles will return to action Feb. 6 as they swim cross-town rival, Howard at 6:00 p.m.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, completed its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and a regular-season title in men’s basketball.
