Eagles Compete at George Mason Invitational
Bassett breaks the meet record in the mile

Christina Huang dropped almost 16 cumulative seconds at the GMU Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va.- The AU swim team put in a good showing at the George Mason Invitational this past weekend with solid performances on both the men’s and women’s side.

For the men, the Eagle teams dominated the meet, never placing below 5th place. In both the 400 medley relay and the 200 medley relay, the team of Stephen Brennen (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), Dominck Szabo (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), Valery Fomenko (Jovy-En-Josas, France/Espadon Develizy), and Stephen Maher (Stuart, Fla./Lincon) placed second, with times of 3:27.19 and 1:34.74, respectively.

Individually, Bassett finished first in the mile and broke the meet record by 11 seconds. In addition, Bassett placed second overall in the 100 breast (57.45) and fourth in the 200 IM (1:53.83). He also placed seventh in the 200 fly with a time of 1:54.53.

Erwan Jeffory (Mareil-Marly, France/Lycee Jeanne D’Albret) took home third place in the 500 free (4:34.98) with his best time this season by five seconds. He also took home fourth place in both the 200 free (1:42.45) and the 200 back (1:52.82). Also performing well, Szabo placed fifth overall in the 50 free (21.47), 17th in the 500 free (4:40.84) and tied for second in the 100 free (46.56).

For the women, sophomore Christina Huang (Hubei Province, China/Wuhan Sports School) improved in both the 200 fly and the 400 IM, where she finished 6th and 7th, respectively. In the 400 IM, Huang set a personal best, swimming the race in 4:32.84, almost 10 seconds faster than she swam against Army and the seventh fastest time in school history. In the 200 IM, Huang again found her place on the AU top ten as she swam another personal best of 2:08.53, almost six seconds faster than her race against UMBC.

Cameron Miller (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee Mission East/Kentucky) won the consolation heat in the 500 free in 5:08.18, almost three seconds faster than her previous swims this season. She also placed 14th in the 400 IM (4:41.97).

The Eagles will swim next at the Princeton Invitational, Dec. 7-8.
