AU Swimming & Diving Falls to Army
Szabo sets pool records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke

Dominick Szabo broke a pool record in the 100 and 200 breas.

WASHINGTON- Both the American University men's and women's swimming teams lost to Army in the first Patriot League bout of the year for the Eagles.

The men put up a strong battle, winning the swimming events 140-121, but in the end fell to the Black Knights because of the lack of diving on the Eagles’ side.

The Eagles were led by senior Dominick Szabo (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), who broke two pool records in both breaststrokes in addition to finishing first in the 100 free (46.15). Szabo, the previous record holder in the 100 breast, broke the nine-year-old 200 breast record with a time of 2:03.74, which was formerly held by Robby Griffin at 2:03.87.

Also swimming well for the men, senior Ethan Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) took home three first-place finishes in the 1650 free (15:45.88), 200 fly (1:53.94) and 400 IM (4:01.36). Valery Fomenko (Jovy-En-Josas, France/EspadonDevelizy) rounded out the men’s nine first-place finishes with two of his own in both the backstrokes.

On the women’s side, the Eagles started the meet out strong, winning the first five events of the meet, including the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:05.51. Senior Jessica Lidstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/The Swedish School in London) helped the Eagles by placing first in the 100 free (53:32), 200 free (1:54.86) and took second in the 50 free with a time of 24.75.

Also swimming strong for AU was freshman Kaitlin Moughty (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) who took first in both backstrokes and second in the 100 fly (59.74) Sophomore Christina Huang (Hubei Province, China/Wuhan) also put in a good showing for the Eagles, taking first place in both breaststrokes, and second in the 400 IM (4:42.43).

The Eagles look to rebound from this meet as they swim Bucknell and Navy at the Naval Academy on Nov. 14.
