Jeffory Takes Top Spot In 500 Freestyle at First Day of Patriot League Championships
Jeffory and Bassett make NCAA 'B' Cuts

Senior Erwan Jeffory took home the top spot in the 500 free, in addition to breaking his own PL record.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior Erwan Jeffory (Mareil-Marly, France/Lycee Jeanne D'Albret) opened his final Patriot League Championship with a bang, winning the 500 freestyle (4:25.19) and breaking his own Patriot League Championship record by almost thee seconds, while fellow senior Ethan Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) took home the second place in the same event (4:25.47), at the first day of the Patriot League Championship Meet at the United States Naval Academy’s Lejenue Hall.

Jeffory entered the finals seated fifth, with a time of 4:34.44, while Bassett sat in the primary position with a time of 4:26.67. Coming back to finals, in addition to taking the top two spots, the both Eagles posted NCAA ‘B’ cuts that will possibly earn them a berth to the NCAA championship.

Junior transfer Cami Miller (Mission Hills, Kan/Shawnee Mission East/ Kentucky) also opened the meet up well, swimming the 500 freestyle in a season-best time of 5:03.82 for fourth place overall. In the morning, Miller posted a time of 5:01.82, which puts her sixth on the AU All-Time Top Ten list. Shannon Westfall (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) also swam the 500 freestyle, placing 18th with a season-best time of 5:17.97.

Senior captain Jessica Lidstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/The Swedish School in London) had a strong showing for the Eagles, finishing seventh overall in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09,77. Freshman Kaitlin Moughty (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) placed 10th in the same event, finding her place on the AU All-Time Top Ten List with her time from the preliminaries (2:09.78). Christina Huang (Hubei Province, China/Wuhan) and Chelsea Oudin (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Senior High) rounded out the individual medley on the women’s side, placing 12th (2:10.07) and 16th (2:16.36), respectively.

For the men, Stephen Brennen (Murraysville, Pa../Franklin Regional) and Valery Fomenko (Jovy-En-Josas, France/EspadonDevelizy) entered the finals seated fourth and fifth in the 200 IM, respectively and brought in points for the Eagles, finishing second (1:53.08) and third (1:53.39), respectively.

Stephen Maher, the lone Eagle in the finals of the 50 freestyle, won the consolation finals with a time of 21.27.

The men’s team finished the first day in second place behind Navy with 147 points, while the women finished the first day of the meet in sixth place with 94 points. The second day of the meet will begin tomorrow at Lejeune Hall at 10:30 a.m.
