Breaks PL Meet Record and Takes Home Top Spot in 400 IM Feb. 27, 2004 - Results
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Breaking his own Patriot League Meet Record, senior Ethan Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) took home a first place finish 400 IM for the AU men’s swimming and diving team, while freshman Kaitlin Moughty placed second in the 200 freestyle for the AU women. After the second day of the meet, the men are in fourth place with 321 points, trailing behind Bucknell, Colgate and Navy while the women are in sixth place with 223 points. Bassett led the 400 IM during the prelims and continued to dominate in the finals, taking first place, by almost five seconds. Teammate Stephen Brennen (Murraysville, Pa../Franklin Regional), finished in second place with a time of 4:00.16. Bassett’s time of 3:55.03 marks American University’s third fastest time, while Brennen’s time marks the eighth. Moughty, who posted a season-best time of 1:52.66 in the prelims of the 200 freestyle, was able to come back in the finals to secure second, followed by senior Jessica Lidstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/The Swedish School in London), who finished third with a time of 1:53.82. Also swimming well for the women, Christina Huang (Hubei Province, China/Wuhan) finished fourth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:34.82, while Cami Miller (Mission Hills, Kan/Shawnee Mission East/ Kentucky) finished eighth in the same event (4:36.76). Chelsea Oudin finished 10th in the 100 fly, only one tenth of a second behind the ninth place finisher. For the men, Erwan Jeffory (Mareil-Marly, France/Lycee Jeanne D'Albret) continued after his win in the 500 freestyle with a second place finish and AU’s fifth fastest time in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.31. In the same event, Estebe Salgado (San Sebastian, Spain/I.E.S. Usandizaga) finished 10th overall with a time of 1:42.89. Valery Fomenko (Jovy-En-Josas, France/EspadonDevelizy) continued to gather more points for the Eagles with his second place finish in the 100 back and fourth place finish in the 100 fly. Fomenko’s time of 51.38 marks the Eagles fifth fastest time, while his butterfly performance is the sixth fastest. In the 200 free, Stephen Maher (Stuart, Fla./Lincoln) won the consolation heat, finishing ninth with a time of 1:41.30, while Kevin Falkenstein won the consolation heat in the 100 back with a time of 51.86. Falkenstein, Bassett, Fomenko and Maher rounded out the Eagles evening, placing third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:22.48. The Eagles will continue at the Patriot League Championships for the final day, Saturday, Feb. 28. Preliminaries are set to begin at 10:30.
