Bassett Finishes Seventh in 200 Breast at Olympic Trials
Two other Eagles compete in trials

Ethan Bassett on Sunday finished seventh in the 200m breast at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

WASHINGTON - Former American University swimmer Ethan Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) on Sunday finished seventh in the 200m breaststroke at the USA Olympic Trials held in Long Beach, Calif.

Bassett, who recently graduated from AU, clocked a 2:16.03 in the finals after finishing in 2:16.19 in his preliminary heat. The winner, Brendan Hansen, finished seven seconds ahead in a world-record time of 2:09.04. The previous record was 2:09.42, set by Japan's Kosuke Kitajima in 2003. USA's other qualifier in the 200 breast, Scott Usher, finished in 2:10.90.

Bassett, a Dean’s list student, graduated in May and was recognized at the spring commencement ceremony by the university for his outstanding performance in both the classroom and the pool with the American University Student Achievement Award.

Meanwhile, assistant coach Mark Liscinsky competed in the 200 free prelims on Thursday and the 200 individual medley prelims on Sunday evening. Liscinsky finished 25th in the 200 IM prelims in a time of 2:06.47 and 40th in the 200 free in 1:52.90.

In addition, incoming freshman swimmer Meghan Thiel finished 58th in the 400 free prelims on Thursday. She finished in a time of 4:25.41.
