O'Brien Advances to NCAA 1,500-meter Finals
Places Fifth in Prelims; Racing Out of Lane 3 in Finals

Sean O'Brien is competing in his first NCAA Championship this weekend.

EUGENE, OR - Sean O'Brien, a sophomore on the American University men's track & field team, will be competing in the 1,500-meter finals at the NCAA Track & Field Championships on Saturday evening.

O'Brien qualified for the finals with a time of 3:44.40, finishing fifth in the second heat of the prelims. The top four finishers from each heat, plus the next best four times overall, advanced to the finals, which will be held on Saturday, June 2, at 6:15 p.m. PST.

O'Brien will be coming out of lane three.

His time of 3:44.40 breaks the school record for the fourth time this season, and he also surpassed his personal best for the fourth time this year as well.

Bryan Berryhill, a senior at Colorado State, posted the fastest time in the prelim heats, finishing in 3:41.83.

The University of Oregon is hosting the 2001 NCAA Track & Field Championships.
