Dec. 8, 2001 | Meet Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The women's indoor track team for American University had an excellent start Saturday at the Navy Lid Lifter. The women established three new school records in the first meet of the season.

In the mile, junior Samia Akbar shattered her own school record by running 5:00.74, finishing only six-tenths of a second behind the winner. Akbar's time qualifies her for the ECAC Championship. Running in her first collegiate indoor track meet, Megan Simpson broke the 1,000-meter run record by running 3:02.86. In addition, the mile relay team of Simpson, Liz Krashes, Leah Heinecke-Krumhus and Brittany Scott established a new indoor mark by running 4:20.34.

Earlier in the meet, Jen Baclawski and Jessica Daniel ran the 5,000 meters in times of 18:22.63 and 18:27.04 respectively. They are now second and third all-time on the American top-ten. In the 3,000 meters, Whitney McNees ran to third all-time with a time of 10:44.49. Heidi Fishpaw is now sixth all-time in the event and Erin Hickey is eighth.

History was also made as American women competed in two events that they never had indoors before. In the 500-meter run, Shondrea Horton and Brittany Scott ran to times of 1:27.50 and 1:27.67. In the shot put, Leigh Sorkin threw 30'2.75" and Megan McCoy threw 22'9.25".

The men’s and women’s teams return to action on January 12 at the George Mason Father Diamond Invitational. The starting time has yet to be announced.
