American Junior Set Indoor Mile Record Saturday

Dec. 12 , 2001

Samia Akbar earned ECAC Player of the Week honors after her school record Saturday in the mile.

WASHINGTON — American University junior Samia Akbar (Herndon, Va. /Oakton) was honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) today as the women’s indoor track Player of the Week after her performance at the Navy Lid Lifter last Saturday.

Akbar placed third in the mile at the meet, finishing in 5:00.74. She finished just 0.63 seconds behind the winner. With her fast time, Akbar qualified for the ECAC Championships and shattered her own American University record by almost 20 seconds.

Akbar led the Eagles through the cross country season. She finished in the top-15 overall in all of the meets she competed. At the Navy Invitational, Akbar finished in second place. She earned All-League honors with her sixth place finish at the Patriot League Championships. At the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Meet, Akbar finished 14th, just missing out on a trip to the NCAA Championships, but still earning her All-Region honors.

The next competition for the men’s and women’s indoor track teams is Jan. 12 at the Father Diamond Invitational. Akbar will be looking to get closer to her goal of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
