O'Brien Earns ECAC Player of the Week Award
American Junior Provisionally Qualified for NCAA Championships

Feb. 13, 2002

Sean O'Brien earned ECAC Player of the Week honors after his school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time in the mile.

WASHINGTON — American University junior Sean O'Brien was honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) today as the men’s indoor track Player of the Week after his performance at the New York Road Runners Collegiate Invitational.

Running in the open division against nine professional runners and only one other collegiate runner, O'Brien finished second in 4:02.00. O'Brien qualified provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Championships to be held in March. His time was only 1.3 seconds off of the automatic qualifier and is the eighth fastest time in the nation prior to Saturday's competitions.

O'Brien is the second Eagle athlete to earn ECAC honors this season. In December, Samia Akbar was named by the ECAC after she broke the school record in the mile. O'Brien earned All-America honors after his tenth place finish in the 1500 meters at the NCAA Championships in 2001.

The next competition for the men’s and women’s indoor track teams is this weekend as they head to West Point, N.Y. to compete in the Patriot League Championships. Competition begins Saturday afternoon and concludes on Sunday.
