Men earn six spots; Akbar garners honor on womens
team
February 22, 2002
WASHINGTON After last weekends Patriot
League Indoor Track and Field Championships, the American University
mens team was tied for second in the league with six All-Patriot
League selections. On the womens side, the Eagles had one All-League
nod.
Leading the way for the men was junior Sean
OBrien who won the mile and was a part of the 4x800-meter relay
team that brought home first place. OBrien set a Patriot League
record with a time of 4:03.38 in the mile and he currently is 13th in
the nation in the event. Freshman Sean
Duffy was also a double-winner for the Eagles. Duffy earned his All-League
honor thanks to his victory in the 1,000-meters and he was also a part
of the 4x800 relay team with OBrien. The other two legs of the 4x800,
junior Jovens Colas
and sophomore Carlos Hunt,
were named to the All-League team as well.
In the distance events, sophomore Frank
Malpigli earned All-League honors after he won the 5,000-meters. Classmate
Matt Seymour was
also named to the All-League team after his second place finish in the
3,000-meters. Seymour just missed the individual title, finishing second
by only .12 seconds.
For the women, junior Samia
Akbar represents American on the All-League team. Akbar won the 5,000-meters,
just missing her own school record. In addition, Akbar anchored the Distance
Medley Relay team to a third place finish.
The men's and women's teams return to action Feb. 23 at the Virginia Tech
Last Chance Meet.
