Men's
4xMile Finishes Seventh in Championship of America April 27, 2002
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. Three races, three school records. That is the result of the 2002 Penn Relays for American's track team. After Samia Akbar set the school record in the 5,000-meters on Thursday and the men's distance medley relay set the new mark on Friday, the 4xMile took to the track on Saturday afternoon. Running in the Championship of America with a number of nationally prominent teams such as Arkansas, Stanford and Villanova, the Eagles finished seventh in the race, running 16:39.86. Freshman Sean Duffy ran the first leg for the Eagles and ran strong, finishing in 4:09.3, just behind the team from Abilene Christian. Duffy handed the baton to sophomore Frank Malpigli who ran a 4:16.6 as the runners from Arkansas and Stanford both ran sub-four minute miles. Malpigli handed off to teammate Matt Seymour who closed the gap on the field, running 4:08.1. Seymour finished his leg and Sean O'Brien ran the anchor leg for the Eagles. O'Brien made a furious charge as the American team finished just .03 behind Brown and only .53 seconds behind the fourth place team in the race. O'Brien ran a 4:05.9 mile to help the Eagles finish in seventh.
