Malpigli Named Patriot League Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year
American sophomore is the third Eagle to earn award

Sophomore Frank Malpigli was named Patriot League Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON — American University sophomore Frank Malpigli (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) was honored by the Patriot League today as the Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote by the league’s Sports Information Directors.

In its inagural season in the Patriot League, Malpigli becomes the third American student-athlete to be named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Karla Kucerkova (women’s volleyball) and Adam Rosen (men’s soccer).

An honors student at American, Malpigli holds an impressive 3.725 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). He is majoring in international studies with a focus on international politics and United States foreign policy. Malpigli is a member of the Phi Alpha Delta pre-law fraternity and the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society. In order to be considered for the league’s scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserver of at least sophomore standing and hold a 3.2 or higher GPA.

Malpigli was named to the All-Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Team following his individual title in the 5,000-meters at the Patriot League Championships in February. In one of the most exciting races at the meet, Malpigli edged out Bucknell’s Greg Costello by .66 seconds. Malpigli’s time of 14:40.89 places him second all-time in American University history in the event. He also won the 5,000-meters at the PVA Collegiate Invitational.

Malpigli and the rest of the American track team return to action on April 6 at the Maryland Invitational.
