Samia Akbar established a new school record in the 5,000-meters as she earned All-East honors at the ECAC Championships.

PRINCETON, N.J. — American junior Samia Akbar (Herndon, Va./Oakton) added to her incredible season by earning All-East honors in the 5,000-meters at the ECAC Championships.

Akbar, the Patriot League champion in the 5,000-meters, finished seventh in the race in 16:43.38. She broke her own school record in the race by almost a second. Akbar held off four runners down at the end of the race to finish in the seventh position.

Akbar improved her position in the NCAA rankings with her time at the ECAC Championships. She had already run a provisional qualifier in the 5,000-meters at the Penn Relays in April.

The NCAA will announce the qualifiers for the championships next Thursday. Akbar must now wait to see if she will be joining classmate Sean O'Brien at the NCAA Championships at the end of the month in Baton Rouge, La.
