O'Brien Breaks School Record in 800-Meters
American junior establishes new mark in NCAA tune-up

Sean O'Brien set a new American University record in the 800-meters. The junior will be running in the NCAA Championships at the end of May.

BOSTON, Mass. — American junior Sean O'Brien (Tewskbury, Mass./Winnisquam Regional) broke yet another school record as he ran his final race before the NCAA Championships.

Running on a chilly Boston evening, O'Brien ran in the elite section of the 800-meters at the New Balance High Performance Series. As expected in an elite race, the pack was tightly bunched as a rabbit paced the field for the first part of the event. O'Brien finished in fourth in a time of 1:50.82, less than one second behind the first place finisher.

O'Brien established a new school record with his time, breaking his own mark of 1:51.05 set at the 2001 Mason Invitational.

O'Brien's will be running in the NCAA Track and Field Championships to be held in Baton Rouge, La. He will run the 1,500-meters where he was an All-American last year and currently holds the fourth fastest time in the nation. The 1,500-meter trials begin on Thursday, May 30 at 7:40 p.m. with the finals being run on Saturday, June 1 at 8:00 p.m.
