Morales
Selected to Attend 2002 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference May 29, 2002
WASHINGTON American University junior Jose Morales was selected to represent the university at the annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference. He is joining nearly 300 NCAA student-athletes from around the country for the conference which is being held in Orlando, Fla. at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. The conference, which is held May 26-30, is a part of the NCAA's CHAMPS/Life Skills Program which helps to prepare student-athletes for graduation and success after school. While in Florida, the student-athletes will discuss important issues that affect them on campus and in their communities. The goal of the leadership conference is to help the student-athletes develop leadership and communication skills which will help them become better leaders and motivators on their college campuses. Morales recently concluded
his third season on the cross country and track and field teams at American.
The junior is third all-time in the indoor 800-meters and eighth in the
outdoor 800-meters. In the 2002 indoor season, he placed seventh at the
PVA Collegiate Invitational and eighth at the Lehigh Quad in the mile. An international affairs
major, Morales currently holds a 3.94 grade-point average (GPA). He is
a McNair Scholar at American and was recently honored by the School of
International Service, receiving the Scholar-Athlete Award. He also was
named to the honor society Phi Beta Kappa. In order to be eligible to attend the conference, a student-athlete must be in good academic standing and have athletics eligibility remaining in the following academic year. The individual schools nominate four student-athletes and the final selections are made from a committee of CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinators from NCAA institutions and student-athletes charged with identifying an outstanding group of leaders.
