Smashes School Record in 3000-Meters January 25, 2003 | Stats
LANDOVER, Md. Samia Akbar broke the American University women's 3000-meter school record by over 17 seconds as the squad competed at the Maryland Invitational. Akbar broke teammate Keira Carlstrom's mark set in December. Akbar won the 3000m in 9-minutes, 43.50 seconds. She won the event by over 11 seconds and is only eight seconds off the NCAA provisional qualifying time. Whitney McNees also ran in the 3000m, running 10:45.88, just over a second off her personal-best time. Zaia Wharton narrowly missed breaking her own school record in the 800m. Running to a 15th-place finish, Wharton ran 2:20.69, just .18 off her record time. In the morning meet, Megan Simpson ran to fifth place in her first meet of the season in the 800m, running 2:28.20. Leah-Heinecke Krumhus was close behind in sixth in 2:28.93. Emily Price led AU's 400m contingent, running 1:06.83. Catie Poppe ran a personal-best time of 1:07.83 while Katie Bassler ran 1:08.98. Lindsay Gilman (11:52.43) and Kaitlyn Lavender (12:26.29) ran in the 3000m for the Eagles. American's next meet is Sat. Feb. 8 at the George Mason Invitational. The meet begins at 10 a.m.
