AU Men Claim Three Individual Titles at Navy Invitational
Ellerhorst, O'Brien and Reilly all victorious in first meet of season

December 6, 2002

Andy Ellerhorst won the 200-meters in a school record time of 22.86

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — American University's men's track and field team captured three first-place finishes and three second-places at the Navy Invitational this weekend. Seniors Andy Ellerhorst and Sean O'Brien and junior Mike Reilly all won their respective events as the indoor track and field season got underway.

Ellerhorst won the 200-meters in a school-record time of 22.86 as he ran over two-tenths of a seconds faster than his previous best time. Ellerhorst also ran in the 400-meters, placing 11th in 52.60. Freshman Angelo Ajayi was second to Ellerhorst in the 200-meters, running 22.97 in his first collegiate race to move to second all-time at AU in the event.

In the 3000-meters, O'Brien won the event in 8:18.74, moving to third all-time on the AU charts. Gary Cohen and David Reinhart are the only two AU athletes to have run faster than O'Brien in the event, having set their marks in 1975 and 1973, respectively. Sean Duffy placed a close second in the 3000m (8:19.17) and Matt Seymour came in fourth in 8:20.19. Duffy and Seymour are now fourth and fifth all-time respectively and all three runners qualified for the IC4A Championship. Carlos Hunt ran a strong race, finishing sixth in 8:30.58.

Reilly edged out Barry Carmody of Navy to win the 800-meters in 1:58.78, bettering his personal best by nearly six seconds. Reilly is now fifth all-time at AU in the event. Michael Edwards placed ninth in the 800-meters in 2:06.21.

In the mile, sophomore Patrick MacAdie placed second behind Navy's Nick Scerbo in 4:23.54. MacAdie established a new personal-best time in the event by over a second. Freshman Kyle Bransfield also broke onto the all-time list in the 55-meter dash, running 6.93. Also competing for AU on the first weekend of competition was junior Ed Topolewski who placed 12th in the 400-meters in 53.00.

The Eagles ran two relays at the meet as well. The distance medley relay finished third in 10:28.62 while the 4x400-meter relay ran the third fastest time ever at AU, finishing in 3:32.49.

American will not compete again until 2003 as the Eagles travel to nearby George Mason for the Father Diamond Invitational.
