Distance Medley Relay Provisionally Qualifies for NCAAs February 14, 2003 | Stats
NEW YORK The American University men's distance medley relay (DMR) team ran an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 9:40.69 while capturing the event at the Armory Collegiate Invitational. The squad of Sean Duffy, Andy Ellerhorst, Phil Gaeta and Sean O'Brien broke the AU school record by over six seconds. The Eagles' time places them currently seventh in the country. Stanford holds the best time in the NCAA this season. AU won their heat of the DMR by six seconds over LaSalle and won the meet with a faster time than Princeton, Georgetown, Texas and LSU. Duffy ran the leadoff leg of 1200-meters for AU. He ran a 2:58 before handing off to Ellerhorst. Ellerhorst split 48.0 seconds for the 400m. In the 800m, Gaeta ran a solid leg of 1:51.6 before passing the baton to O'Brien. The two-time All-American ran 4:01 for the mile to send the Eagles to victory and the NCAA qualifying mark. The rest of American's track and field team is competing at the Collegiate Invitational in Fairfax, Va. on Feb. 15th. Next weekend, the squad heads to Hamilton, N.Y. for the Patriot League Championships.
