Akbar and Carlstrom Break School Records at GMU Collegiate Invitational
Eagles perform well in final meet before Patriot Leagues

Keira Carlstrom won the mile in a school record time of 4:57.08.

FAIRFAX, Va. — Senior Samia Akbar and freshman Keira Carlstrom broke each other’s school records at the George Mason Collegiate Invitational Saturday. In the final tune-up for the Patriot League Championships, Carlstrom won the mile while Akbar placed third in the 1000-meters. For the men, junior Carlos Hunt won the mile.

Carlstrom captured the mile in a school record time of 4-minutes 57.08 seconds. She won the race by nearly two seconds over Georgetown’s Emily Reaman. Carlstrom breaks Akbar’s records set last year by over two seconds. Sophomore Whitney McNees placed ninth in the race, running 5:22.93.

In an extremely fast 1000-meters, Akbar broke Carlstrom’s school record while placing third in 2:53.35. The top three runners in the race were all well under the ECAC qualifying time of 2:57.54. Akbar broke Carlstrom’s record by almost two seconds. Freshman Zaia Wharton ran a personal-best time in the race of 3:00.36 to improve to third all-time at AU.

Sophomore Megan Simpson ran a personal-best time in the 800m of 2:20.71. Simpson’s time was just .20 seconds off the AU school record. Junior Leah Heinecke-Krumhus placed 19th in 2:30.85.

On the men’s side, Hunt won the mile in a personal-best time of 4:14.24. He won the event by over a second over Georgetown’s Pat Lenaghan. Hunt’s time keeps him seventh all-time at AU. Freshman Pat Burford finished seventh while running to a personal-best time of 4:28.10.

Senior Michael Edwards finished fifth in the 800m while running a personal-best 2:01.54. Senior John Campbell placed 15th in the 200m in 23.58 and 15th in the 400m in 52.01.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday at the Patriot League Championships in Hamilton, N.Y. The meet begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and concludes at noon on Sunday.
