AU Women Win Three Events in Final Day of Patriot League Track Competition
Akbar named Patriot League Women's Track Athlete of the Meet

Samia Akbar was named Patriot League Women's Track Athlete of the Meet after winning the mile and helping AU to wins in the 4x800m and DMR.

HAMILTON, N.Y. — American University's women's track and field team concluded a successful Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships with three first-place finishes and one second place on the final day of competition. Senior Samia Akbar added the Patriot League Women's Track Athlete of the Meet honors to her already decorated career at AU.

Akbar started her day by winning the mile in 4:55.59. Her mark was just off the Patriot League meet record as she set a new AU record. She finished her day by anchoring the distance medley relay (DMR) to the victory.

Freshman Keira Carlstrom ran the leadoff leg of the DMR for the Eagles, covering the 1200-meters in 3:40. She handed off to sophomore Megan Simpson who ran 1:03 for the 400m. Freshman Zaia Wharton took the baton for the 800m and ran 2:22 before handing off to Akbar. Akbar closed in 4:58.4 for the mile sending AU to the Patriot League meet record as well as a new American University record of 12:03.92.

Carlstrom was AU's other individual winner, winning the 1000m in 2:55.54 closing in her final 800m at 2:16. Wharton broke the school record en route to finishing second in the 800m in 2:16.79.

Sophomore Whitney McNees also ran in the mile for the Eagles, placing ninth in 5:24.04

American finished the meet with 48 points, good for fifth in the meet. Bucknell won the team title.
