Sean Duffy was named Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week.

WASHINGTON — American University sophomore Sean Duffy (Holmes, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) earned his first Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week award after qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships in the 1500-meters last weekend at the Maryland Invitational.

Duffy won the 1500m in a time of 3:48.54, winning by nearly three seconds. His time was a second and a half faster than the NCAA qualifying standard and is the fastest in the Patriot League this season. Duffy also finished second in the 800m just .28 seconds behind teammate Sean O’Brien (Tewksbury, Mass./Winnisquam Regional). Duffy’s time of 1:53.37 is the third-fastest in the Patriot League.

Duffy earned All-America honors in indoor track as the leadoff leg of the distance medley relay (DMR). He earned All-Patriot League honors in cross country and indoor track earlier this season. Duffy was the 1000m champion at the Patriot League Championships and ran on the winning 4x800m relay and DMR squads.

The American University Track and Field team competes this weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. The meet begins Friday at 7 p.m. and continues Saturday at 11 a.m.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
