Sean Duffy added ECAC Track Athlete of the Week honors after receiving the Patriot League award yesterday.

WASHINGTON — After earning Patriot League honors yesterday, American University sophomore Sean Duffy (Holmes, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Track Athlete of the Week. Duffy earns the honor for the second time in his career.

The Patriot League leader in the 1500m, Duffy won the Maryland Invitational in 3:48.54 to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships. He also finished second in the 800m in the meet, just .28 seconds behind the winner, teammate Sean O’Brien (Tewksbury, Mass./Winnisquam Regional).

Duffy previously earned the ECAC Track Athlete of the Week honor last year after his performance at the Penn Relays. He earned All-America honors in March as the leadoff leg of the distance medley relay (DMR) at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. He earned All-Patriot League honors in cross country and indoor track earlier this season while being named to the All-League squad in indoor and outdoor track in 2002. Duffy was the 1000m champion at the Patriot League Championships the past two seasons and ran on the winning 4x800m relay and DMR squads.

The American University Track and Field team competes this weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. The meet begins Friday at 7 p.m. and continues Saturday at 11 a.m.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
