May 29, 2003 | Complete Meet Notes

Sean O'Brien will be in search of his third straight NCAA trip this weekend.

WASHINGTON — American University's track program has six runners competing at this weekend’s NCAA East Regional with four men and two women making the trip to nearby George Mason. Freshman Keira Carlstrom will run in the women’s 1500m at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and senior Sean O’Brien, sophomore Sean Duffy and freshman Phil Gaeta will compete in the men’s 1500m. All of these athletes will be running in the preliminary heats in hopes of advancing to the final on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. Friday evening, senior Samia Akbar will run in the women’s 5000m while junior Matt Seymour races in the men’s 5000m in an event beginning at 6:30 p.m.

For the first time ever, the NCAA will hold regional qualifying for the NCAA Championships. AU is in the East Regional, which is the largest of the four regions with 110 men’s squads and 112 women’s teams. The region runs down the East Coast from Maine to Florida and includes West Virginia. The top five athletes in each individual event and the top three relay teams will automatically advance to the NCAA Championship Meet to be held at California State University in Sacramento, Calif., from June 11-14.
