Matt Seymour was named to the Verizon Academic All-District II Second Team.

WASHINGTON — American University junior Matt Seymour (Rockville, Md./Magruder) was named to the Verizon Academic All-District II Second Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Seymour is one of 20 men regionally honored and is the seventh AU student-athlete to receive regional recognition this year.

Seymour is a history major with a 3.47 grade-point average (GPA). To be nominated for the honor, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and be a key member of his team.

The back-to-back Patriot League Champion in the outdoor 5000m, Seymour was named to the All-Patriot League First Team in cross country and outdoor track and field. He finished second at the Patriot League Cross Country Championships last fall and fourth in the 5000m at the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships. Seymour ran on the school record-setting 4xMile Relay squad at the Penn Relays as the team finished seventh in the Championship of America.

This weekend, Seymour will compete at the NCAA East Regional in the 5000m where he earned a qualifying spot by winning the Patriot League meet. The NCAA East Regional Championship will be hosted by George Mason in Fairfax, Va. on May 30-31. The competition begins on May 30th at 2 p.m. and Seymour will run in the 5000m at 6:30 p.m.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and a regular-season title in men’s basketball.
