American Men’s Track Seats 16 on Patriot League Academic Honor Roll
Four-time All-American O’Brien leads squad

Sean O'Brien was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for the spring semester.

WASHINGTON — American University’s men’s track and field squad had 16 student-athletes named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for the spring of 2003 as announced today by Patriot League Executive Director, Carolyn Schlie Femovich.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average (GPA) in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the six winter and nine spring League-sponsored championship sports.

Four-time All-American Sean O’Brien (Tewksbury, Mass./Winnisquam Regional) earned a spot on the honor roll in his final semester at AU with a 3.93 GPA. He was joined on the squad by fellow All-American Andy Ellerhorst (Garrettsville, Ohio/James A. Garfield). Other seniors on the honor roll were John Campbell (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) and Chad Young (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham).

Junior Matt Seymour (Rockville, Md./Magruder), a member of the Verizon Academic All-District II Second Team, was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Juniors Frank Malpigli (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and Ed Topolewski (Englewood Cliffs, N.J./Dwight Englewood) also earned a spot on the honor roll. Sophomores on the squad were headlined by Matthew Barresi (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and Danny Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs), both of whom posted 4.00 GPAs in the spring. Patrick MacAdie (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) and Chris Repka (East Windsor, N.J./Highstown) also made the squad.

Five members of the freshman class appear on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll with Chris Buerger (Groveland, Mass.), Pat Burford (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), All-American Phillip Gaeta (Herndon, Va./Oakton), Will Knox (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) and Phillip Turner (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area) all on the team.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and a regular-season title in men’s basketball.
