American Garners 10 Spots on Patriot League Men's and Women's Indoor Track All-League Teams
PL Indoor Co-Athlete of the Meet Matt Seymour leads way for Eagles

Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Co-Athlete of the Meet Matt Seymour joined nine other Eagles on the league's First- and Second-Teams.

WASHINGTON — Ten student-athletes from the American University men’s and women’s indoor track teams have been named to the Patriot League first and second All-League teams, league officials announced Friday.

For the men, senior Matt Seymour (Rockville, Md./Magruder), the Patriot League’s Co-Athlete of the Meet at the indoor championships, was the Eagles’ lone pick on the league’s First-Team. Seymour earned individual titles in the 3,000m and 5,000m races, just missing out on setting a league record in the 3,000m race. Seymour’s time of 8:22.14 in the 3,000m was just 2/100th of a second slower than the record set by Colgate’s Ray Appenheimer in 1992.

AU’s Chris Buerger (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional), Sean Duffy (Holmes, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara), Dustin Emrani (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North), Phil Gaeta (Herndon, Va./Oakton) and Rob Hofmann (Wantagh, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) were all named Second-Team All-League. Buerger, Duffy, Emrani and Gaeta all combined to nab a second-place finish in the Distance Medley Relay, while Duffy, Emrani, Gaeta and Hofmann finished second in the 4x800 race, in which they set a school record. In addition, Duffy, who was named All-League in 2002 and 2003, finished second in the 1,000m, while Gaeta, who earned his second consecutive All-League nod, finished second in the mile.

On the women’s side, four Eagles were named to the league’s First Team, led by repeat performer Keira Carlstrom (Oakton, Va./Oakton), who was also named to the 2003 All-League squad. The sophomore raced to a first-place finish in the 3,000m and a second-place finish in the mile. Carlstrom also combined with freshmen Ashley Dellinger and Kelley Taylor (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) and junior Whitney McNees (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) to capture the league title in the DMR, and with McNees, Taylor and Zaia Wharton (Elkins, W. Va./Elkins) to finish second in the 4x800, in which they also set a school record. Meanwhile, Taylor brought home a title in the mile run.

Overall, the men’s indoor team finished fourth and the women fifth, despite sending significantly smaller contingents to the league championship meet.
