Outdoor Track Opens Season at Coastal Carolina
Carlstrom smashes school record in 800m

WASHINGTONKeira Carlstrom (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and Phil Gaeta (Herndon, Va./Oakton) each won the 800m races to lead American in its outdoor track season-opener at Coastal Carolina on Saturday.

Carlstrom was one of a trio of Eagles on the women's side to win races. The sophomore finished the 800m in a time of 2:12.17, smashing the previous school record set last season by Zaia Wharton (Elkins, W. Va./Elkins) by 3.6 seconds. Wharton finished second on Saturday, a little over four seconds behind Carlstrom.

Freshman Kelley Taylor (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) dominated in winning the 3000m run, winning by more than 1:13 over her nearest competitor with a time of 9:46.31. Whitney McNees (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) set a personal best in winning the 1500m run with a time of 4:52.48. In addition, freshman Ashley Dellinger (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) finished second in the 400m with a time of 1:02.52.

For the men, Gaeta and Sean Duffy (Holmes, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) captured victories for the Eagles. Gaeta was a second faster than his closest competitor in the 800m to come away with the win in a time of 1:54.58. Duffy led a trio of Eagles in the top three spots in the 1500m. Duffy finished in 3:50.51, while senior Matt Seymour (Rockville, Md./Magruder) nabbed second at 3:53.84 and Pat MacAdie (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) finished third in 3:57.33.

Pat Burford (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) rounded out the top-three finishes for the Eagles with a second place finish in the 3000m run. The sophomore completed the course in 8:39.48.

The outdoor track team returns to action March 27 when it competes at the Navy Invite.
