May 16, 2004

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — American University's Keira Carlstrom (Oakton, Va./Oakton) broke her own school record and placed second in the 1500m Sunday at the ECAC Championships hosted by Yale University.

Carlstrom ran the course in 4:25.21, nearly half a second faster than her time the day before, when she won the 1500m preliminaries in a time of 4:25.74. Her time Saturday was approximately two seconds faster than AU's previous record, set by assistant coach Samia Akbar in 2002. Carlstrom now holds the school record in the 1500m and the 3000m, and has the second-fastest times in the 800m and 5000m races.

The second-year AU athlete finished just over a second behind Pittsburgh's Maureen McCandless.
