Duffy Wins 1500m at NCAA East Regional
Senior will advance to NCAA Championship meet June 9-12

Junior Sean Duffy won the 1500m race Friday at the NCAA East Regional, earning a berth in the NCAA Championship Meet June 9-12.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — American University runner Sean Duffy (Holmes, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) on Friday won the finals of the 1500m race at the NCAA East Regional, allowing him to advance to the NCAA Championship Meet on June 9-12.

The senior middle-distance runner won the race with a time of 3:50.02, besting runner-up Goran Nava of Radford by .2 seconds. In a tightly contested race, seven runners finished within a half-second of first place. The top four runners in each final move on to the NCAA Championship Meet.

Duffy earned a trip to the 1500m final with a second-place finish in the preliminaries. Duffy finished the prelims in 3:49.48, nearly a full second behind the East Regional recordholder, Tom Parlapiano of Villanova. In the final, Parlapiano finished sixth.

Meanwhile, AU runners Matt Seymour (Rockville, Md./Magruder) and Keira Carlstrom (Oakton, Va./Oakton) also competed at the Regional. Seymour finished seventh in the finals of the 5000m run with a time of 14:27.09. Carlstrom finished 13th in the preliminaries of the 1500m with a time of 4:29.07. Neither runner will advance to the NCAA Championship Meet.
