Former AU Athlete Sean O'Brien Ranked Seventh in Nation in 1500m
Eagle alum working toward Olympic goal

AU track assistant coach Sean O'Brien is currently ranked seventh in the nation in the 1500m and will have a chance to make the Olympic team at the trials July 9-18.

WASHINGTON — Former American University track athlete and current AU assistant coach Sean O’Brien (Tewksbury, Mass./Winnisquam Regional) is currently ranked seventh in the nation in the 1500m and will soon have a chance to fulfill his dream of making the U.S. Olympic team.

O’Brien on June 27 ran a 3:38.71 in the 1500m competing at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials Twilight Distance Qualifier at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. The time is the 10th-fastest in the nation this year, according to U.S.A. Track & Field’s 2004 Top USA Outdoor Track & Field Marks.

Twenty-one year old phenom Alan Webb holds the nation’s top four marks in the 1500m this year, ranging from a personal best of 3:32.73 set at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic to a 3:35.71 on May 22. Charlie Grubb of the Nike Club ranked second with a 3:37.23, Said Ahmed third with a 3:37.49, Michael Stember fourth with a 3:37.75, Jason Lunn fifth with a 3:37.79 and David Krummenacker sixth with a 3:38.59. O’Brien also holds the 19th-fastest 1500m time in the nation this year with a 3:40.47 on June 11.

O’Brien is currently training in the 1500m alongside current AU athlete Sean Duffy (Holmes, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) for the Olympic Trials July 9-18 at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. The quarterfinals will be held Thursday, July 15 at 8 p.m. (PST), the semifinals on July 16 at 7:40 p.m. and the finals on July 18th at 4:30 p.m.
