Aug. 28, 2001

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- American University's head volleyball coach, Barry Goldberg, has announced that the team will hold open tryouts on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 5:30 p.m. atBender Arena Court A.

The Patriot League recently named American University as the favorite to win the league volleyball title in its annual preseason poll. Coaches and sports information directors at each of the eight Patriot League member institutions gave the Eagles 10 first place votes, ousting last year's league champion Bucknell, who only received two first place scores.

The Eagles are expected to dominate in 2001, their first year of competition in the Patriot League. The team completed a stellar 26-4 outing last season and an 11-1 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Head coach Barry Goldberg celebrated his third CAA Coach of the Year nod along with his 300th career victory while five of his Eagles earned All-CAA honors, including a Regional All-America selection.

The Eagles open their season on August 31 against Coastal Carolina as part of the two-day Davidson Classic Tournament. American's first Patriot League match of the season is a road contest on Sept. 21 at Holy Cross.
