American Volleyball Beats Georgetown In Thriller
Eagles earn eighth straight win against local foe

Game Stats | October 10, 2001

WASHINGTON -- For the third consecutive year it took five games to determine the winner of the local American-Georgetown volleyball rivalry, and on Wednesday the visiting team finally prevailed as the Eagles defeated the Hoyas, 3-2, at McDonough Arena. Scores of the nailbiter were: 24-30, 30-22, 30-32, 30-27, 15-13.

American defeated Georgetown in five games last year at Bender Arena while the Hoyas claimed the win in 1999 in their home arena. The win on Wednesday, however, extended the Eagles’ current win streak to eight matches and marked the first time since Sept. 9 that the Eagles lost a single game.

American (13-2, 6-0 Patriot League) was led offensively by junior Judit Szekelyhidi (Ujszentivan, Hungary/Szegedian Club) who posted 15 kills along with a .542 attack percentage. She also notched 4.5 blocks on the night. Sophomore Karla Kucerkova (Olomovc, Czech Republic/Brno) and senior Eneida Muzhaqi (Elbasan, Albania/Qwmal Stafa) also came up big with 16 and 13 kills, respectively.

Setter Sabrina Vasconcelos (Fortalezza, Brazil/Colegio Christus) continued her outstanding rookie season with 50 assists and defensive specialist Natalie Hand (Keizer, Ore./McNary) anchored the Eagle defense with a team-high 10 digs.

Georgetown saw its two-match win streak snapped and fell to 8-6 overall (5-1 Big East).

American prepares to host Navy on Friday at 8:00 p.m. in a Patriot League match that will preclude the evening’s “Midnight Madness” festivities.

Match Summary
Kills: American 62, Georgetown 69
Attack Percentage: American .265, Georgetown .177
Blocks: American 11, Georgetown 9
Assits: American 60, Georgetown 65
