For the third consecutive year it took five games to determine the winner
of the local American-Georgetown volleyball rivalry, and on Wednesday
the visiting team finally prevailed as the Eagles defeated the Hoyas,
3-2, at McDonough Arena. Scores of the nailbiter were: 24-30, 30-22, 30-32,
30-27, 15-13. American (13-2, 6-0 Patriot League) was led offensively by junior Judit Szekelyhidi (Ujszentivan, Hungary/Szegedian Club) who posted 15 kills along with a .542 attack percentage. She also notched 4.5 blocks on the night. Sophomore Karla Kucerkova (Olomovc, Czech Republic/Brno) and senior Eneida Muzhaqi (Elbasan, Albania/Qwmal Stafa) also came up big with 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Setter Sabrina Vasconcelos (Fortalezza, Brazil/Colegio Christus) continued her outstanding rookie season with 50 assists and defensive specialist Natalie Hand (Keizer, Ore./McNary) anchored the Eagle defense with a team-high 10 digs. Georgetown saw its two-match win streak snapped and fell to 8-6 overall (5-1 Big East). American prepares to host Navy on Friday at 8:00 p.m. in a Patriot League match that will preclude the evenings Midnight Madness festivities.
