Earns Volleyball Rookie of the Week October 29, 2001
WASHINGTON --Freshman Daria Bobko (Moscow, Russia/S.W. School #783) became the second Eagle to earn the Patriot Leagues Volleyball Rookie of the Week this season as American continued its outstanding season with a 3-0 performance last week. A native of Moscow, Russia, Bobko recorded seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage in the Eagles wins over both Howard and Patriot League foe Colgate. She added three service aces against the Raiders on Friday and picked up eight kills, along with two service aces, in the teams win over defending Patriot League champion Bucknell on Saturday. The 6-3 outside hitter tallied 22 kills and a .477 hitting percentage on the week along with six service aces, nine digs and 1.5 blocks. American improved to 19-2 overall and a perfect 11-0 in league action while clinching a slot in the Patriot League Volleyball Championship with the win over Colgate. The team is currently ranked first in the country in service aces, sixth in hitting percentage and ninth in win-loss percentage while riding a 14-match winning streak. Next up for the Eagles is a trip to the Lehigh Valley for matches at Lafayette, on Friday at 7:00 p.m., and at Lehigh, on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are currently second in the league standings and have clinched the second of four slots in the league championship. American University became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1 after competing in the Colonial Athletic Association since the 1985-86 academic year. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 womens sports and nine for men.
