Women's
Volleyball Remains On NCAA Tourney Bubble Despite 26-4 Mark
Senior Ajola
Berisha earns second CAA Player of the Year honor; Head Coach Barry Goldberg
earns third Coach of the Year honor.
Nov. 27, 2000
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American University WOMEN's VOLLEYBALL team stared
blankly at the 2000 NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament selection show
for any sign that they would receive an at-large bid to the tournament.
Unfortunately, the 26-4 and CAA regular-season (11-1) Champions never
saw their name appear. The Eagles will not be making a return appearance
to the NCAA tournament, but finished a solid season with five post season
accolades.
They were prohibited from competing in the CAA Women's Volleyball Championships
last weekend due to the institution's announcement regarding a change
in conferences from the CAA to the Patriot League.
Senior Ajola Berisha (Tirana, Albania/SK Tirana) who earned her second
CAA Player of the Year nod. Head Coach Barry Goldberg earned his third
CAA Coach of the Year honor after marking his 300th career victory with
AU's win over Howard on November 14, 2000. Sophomore Judit Szekelyhidi
(Ujszentivan, Hungary/Szegedian) was named to the All-CAA First Team,
while seniors Silvia Panak (Anahiem, CA/Long Beach State) and Maria Zhuravleva
(Yeketerinburg, Russia/Uralochka) earned Second Team All-CAA honors.
