American Volleyball Places 10 on Patriot League Academic Honor Roll
Eagles lead league in honor roll selections for volleyball

Sophomore Karla Kucerkova led 10 Eagles on the Patriot League Fall Academic Honor Roll.

WASHINGTON — American sophomore outside hitter Karla Kucercova (Olomovc, Czech Republic/Brno), the 2001 Patriot League Volleyball Scholar-Athlete and Player of the Year, along with sophomore Natalie Hand (Keizer, Ore./McNary) recorded a perfect 4.00 grade-point average during the fall semester and were among a league-high 10 Eagles named to the 2001 Patriot League Volleyball Academic Honor Roll.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.2 grade-point average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the seven league-sponsored fall championship sports. A total of 480 student-athletes, including 34 volleyball players, were named to the League’s Fall Academic Honor Roll, including 23 with 4.00 GPAs. The Fall Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.

American volleyball finished the 2001 season as the Patriot League Champion with a 26-4 record and a perfect 14-0 mark against league opponents. Head Coach Barry Goldberg was named the league’s Coach of the Year as he guided the program to its fourth NCAA appearance.

With ten honor roll selections, the American volleyball team led the Patriot League in academic honors. The Eagles will return ten letterwinners from this year’s squad in 2002.

American University, which is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League, officially joined the conference on July 1. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
