Kucerkova Recognized as PL Player of the Week
Junior leads league in kills for Eagles

WASHINGTON — Reaching game-highs in kills twice this weekend, American University junior Karla Kucerkova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/Brno) was named the Volleyball Patriot League Player of the Week for Oct. 7. This marks the first time this year and fourth time in her career that Kucerkova has been honored.

The outside hitter recorded her second double-double of the season Friday night in a 3-1 win over Bucknell as she had 24 kills and a career-high 17 digs. On Saturday, the Eagles defeated Colgate 3-0 as the 2001 Patriot League Player of the Year was impressive with 18 kills and seven digs.

So far this season, Kucerkova has also been named to two All-Tournament Teams including the Louisville Classic and University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Tournament. This award is the fifth major award the Eagles have earned in 2002.

This weekend American faces Lehigh on Friday and Lafayette on Saturday - both 7 p.m. starts.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely successful year to date on respective fields of play, capturing league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
