Registers 1,000th Kill, Named PL Player of the Week November 4, 2002
WASHINGTON — American University junior Karla Kucerkova has been named the Patriot League Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to a perfect 11-0 showing in the league while amassing her 1,000th kill Friday night in the second game against Colgate. The weekly award is Kucerkova's second in 2002 and fifth in two years. The Olomouc, Czech Republic native leads the league in kills with 4.81 per game and is second only to teammate Cathy Fluegeman in hitting percentage at .396. On Saturday night, Kucerkova tallied her fourth double-double in five matches with 20 kills and 11 digs in a victory over Bucknell. American, which is on a 12-game winning streak, will host Lafayette and Lehigh this weekend at Bender Arena. AU has already earned a berth and will host the Patriot League Championships on Nov. 22-23. American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has capturing league championships in cross country, men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
