Volleyball Muscles Past UMBC Retrievers, 3-0 November 5, 2002 | Stats
BALTIMORE, Md. — Showing no fear, the American University volleyball team recovered from a 19-10 second game deficit to beat the University of Maryland-Baltimore County 3-0 Tuesday night at the UMBC RAC Arena by scores of 30-27, 30-25, 30-13. Rung up as the 13th straight win and one of two non-conference victories in the string for the Eagles, AU improves to 21-6 overall and a perfect 11-0 in Patriot League play. American will resume Patriot League action this weekend when it hosts Lafayette and Lehigh on Friday and Saturday night, respectively. Senior middle blocker Judit Szekelyhidi notched six of her match-high 20 kills in the opening game. The Hungary native showed her staying power with nine kills in the critical game twomeeting. Sophomore Sabrina Vasconcelos set the offense for AU with 36 assists, four kills and seven digs. American was dominant on the serving line as junior Karla Kucerkova delivered with five of the team's eight aces. Kucerkova, the reining Patriot League Player of the Week, chipped in with 10 kills and 13 digs for her fifth double-double in six tries.
